Take Two is an immersive deep-listening night consisting of two elements: an uninterrupted, high-quality playback of a seminal jazz album, followed by a live, modern-day reinterpretation by New York City’s finest musicians.
Our fourth event will feature Spiritual Unity, the 1964 early free jazz album by American saxophonist Albert Ayler with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray.
Will Shore will lead the live reinterpretation and arrange Ayler’s iconic melodies for a 8-piece ensemble of improvisers. In pursuit of Spiritual Unity’s elusive group spontaneity, they will match the momentum and agility of the trio by using a conductor to focus and structure the band’s energy. They will develop fully realized arrangements in real-time, incorporating funk, no-wave, contemporary classical music, and other later genres that Albert Ayler influenced.
